Uni of Herts: 7 Must-See Freshmen Week Events

Freshers – welcome to Hertfordshire!

Next week, the University of Hertfordshire will open its doors at College Lane and de Havilland campuses to new students from the UK and around the world.

This can only mean one thing – freshman week is here.

Here’s what new students can expect in 2022:

1. Moving in party, the loft

When? Saturday September 24 (10 p.m. to 3 a.m.).

Where? The Forum’s Seventy7 and The Loft, at College Lane Campus, Hatfield.

How many? Students – £8, Guests – £10.

DJ KALM has been confirmed for the first student union night of 2022-23.

“The one and only ‘Moving In Party’ is finally back, sponsored by the students of Strats,” a statement from the Students’ Union read.

“It’s time to meet and make friends with new students and alumni at our brand new venue while listening to the hottest tracks presented by our top DJs including DJ KALM.”

2. HelloFest, The Oval

When? Sunday September 25 (12 p.m.-6 p.m.).

Where? The Ring on the College Lane campus, Hatfield.

How many? No ticket needed.

Featuring kho kho, roller skating, speedminton, ultimate frisbee and dodgeball, HelloFest is billed as a “mini daytime festival on the last day of the move-in weekend”.

From 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., HelloFest promises entertainment, music and conviviality.

Live DJs will perform with an inflatable obstacle course, free ice cream, street food and other performances on offer.

Students can even register to perform on stage.

3. Climate Crafts and Ecological Arts, Hutton Hall

When? Monday September 26 (1 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.).

Where? Herts Students’ Union, College Lane Campus, Hatfield.

How many? £2.50 per ticket.

This outdoor event (weather permitting – inside Hutton Hall in wet weather) includes three 45-minute sessions between 1pm and 3:45pm.

“This creative social session aims to teach you sustainable ways to upcycle old clothes and create cool collages and coasters from old scraps around your home and garden,” the description reads.

“For the tie-dye, we will provide the t-shirts and the tie-dye, it’s up to you what you create with it.

“You can decide to go for a full-fledged rainbow or opt for a cooler pastel color palette.

“Whatever your look, we’ll be there to guide you. Once the workshop is over, you can keep your creations and wear them with pride.”

Aprons or wearing old clothes are recommended, the description adds.

4. Speed ​​Friending, The Chapman Lounge

When? Tuesday September 27 (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.).

Where? The Champman Lounge, Main Reception, College Lane Campus, Hatfield.

How many? Free (with ticket).

“Beat the awkwardness with our fast-paced session to meet and make new friends,” organizers said.

“Like speed-dating, you’ll have a few minutes to chat one-on-one with another student before talking to someone else.”

A few minutes of one-on-one conversation with each individual is supplemented with predefined questions to help the conversation flow.

Three one-hour sessions will begin at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

5. Big Wednesday Launch Party, The Forum

When? Wednesday, September 28 (10 p.m.-3 a.m.).

Where? The Forum Loft, College Lane campus, Hatfield.

How many? Miscellaneous (with ticket).

The “big night” of college week, Great Wednesdays, has its first night of the semester on September 28.

With “heaps of gifts”, the launch party begins at 10 p.m. and lasts until 3 a.m.

The organizers promise animators, stilt walkers and a “fully dressed place”.

JYNX, Jay Knox and DJ FXZE are featured.

6. Walk-in party in the common room, common rooms

When? Thursday September 29 (4 p.m. to 10 p.m.).

Where? Common rooms on the College Lane and de Havilland campuses, both in Hatfield.

How many? Free (with ticket).

“In collaboration with our societies, join us for an energetic meeting in your common room,” organizers said.

“Find us on College Lane and de Havilland as we socialize with music, activities and games.”

7. Welcome Fair, Hutton Lawn

When? Friday September 30 (10am-4pm).

Where? Hutton Lawn, College Lane campus, Hatfield.

On September 30, a Welcome Fair will be held at the Hutton Lawn Campus, Collage Lane.

This will feature stalls run by local businesses, charities, organizations and the Herts Student Union.

Offers described as “incredible”, freebies, food and drink will all be available.

The event also provides a chance for students to learn about the range of companies available to join the university.
