Art Dubai 2022, the world’s leading platform for art and artists from the Middle East and the South, is rounding out its arts program this year with a series of live events, a varied and tiered conference program that caters to a wide range of interests, and interactive family workshops suitable for all ages. The 15th edition of the event will be held from March 11-13, 2022 at the Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.
For over 15 years, Art Dubai has played an important and leading role in the development of Dubai’s cultural ecosystem and is a major contributor to the development of the country’s future cultural leaders. This year, the fair presents the most comprehensive edition to date with more than 100 contemporary, modern and digital galleries from 44 countries. The event reinforces Dubai’s emergence as an international hub for art and culture and a major contributor to conversations about contemporary art.
Art Dubai 2022 features an expanded program of education and conferences, including the most ambitious children’s program to date, developed in partnership with ARM Holding, and now engaging over 5,000 children across 80 schools in Dubai. Additionally, the fair has partnered with the Art Writers Agency (AWA), a newly established organization that aims to support the development of UAE-based journalism and arts writers. Art Dubai is part of a diverse set of attractions highlighted by the #DubaiDestinations initiative which is now focused on showcasing the outstanding experiences, events and activities of the ongoing #DubaiArtSeason.
This year’s ARM Holding children’s program offers artist-led workshops for children ages 5-17. With a focus on sustainability, the program will be led by Kenyan artist Cyrus Kabiru (AKKA Project), who will work with participants to salvage and reuse everyday materials from their homes and schools, and transform them into works of art. Through these workshops, Cyrus will challenge participants to shift their perspectives and re-examine how they view everyday objects and their wider surroundings. ARM Holding’s first children’s program will take place at Art Dubai before expanding to 80 schools, reaching more than 5,000 children in Dubai, in line with ARM Holding’s long-term commitment to arts education and Dubai’s creative economy.
This year’s workshops are separated into three age groups, each with different learning outcomes: 5-7 years old; 8-12 years old; and from 13 to 17 years old with walk-in sessions on Friday March 11 between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturday March 12 between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Art Dubai also offers an innovative lecture program for a wide range of audiences. Entitled “This is the Picture”, commissioned by Shumon Basar, and taking place over four days, the 15th edition of the Global Art Forum examines the worlds of digital artifacts and crypto-economies, inviting artists, curators, creators, leading thinkers and technologists to consider a range of topics from NFT art and curation projects to crypto games and the metaverse, Web3 and Dubai’s New Crypto Zone. Bybit Talks is an eclectically curated series of conversations presented by the leading and leading cryptocurrency exchange, which aims to give visitors a better understanding of the rapid growth of digital platforms. Art Writers’ Agency (AWA) was founded in 2022 by journalist and academic Melissa Gronlund to support the development of the next generation of cultural writers in a rapidly changing media landscape by connecting art writers with editorial opportunities to UAE, while also offering mentoring programs. , workshops and practical training. The first cohort of eight writers was selected following an open call, and Art Dubai is pleased to be a founding partner in this important component of the cultural ecosystem.
Established in 2012, Campus Art Dubai was the first program of its kind in the region and served as a school for artists, curators, writers, architects, designers and cultural producers based in the United Arab Emirates. Each year a special program is designed around a relevant theme and CAD participants explore the importance of local knowledge with individuals and institutions in the region through course materials and a series of seminars, lectures, workshops and off-site visits.
Powered by Materia, Campus Art Dubai 9.0 Blockchain Edition is an 8-week program hosting 12 artists – six based in the United Arab Emirates and six international – with experience in photography, videography, visual arts, art and photography. animation, sound or new media art. The program culminates in participants creating their own NFT artwork which is featured in a dedicated Art Dubai 2022 exhibition and exhibited on the Materia platform.
