Saanich police are trying to identify two suspects in a case where more than $2,500 was extorted from a victim using the dating app Grindr last month.

The suspects created a profile on the online dating app, which caters to the LGBTQ community, using the names Jay and Oliver and made contact with the victim. They gathered personal and private information during a conversation and provided false information about themselves before meeting the victim in person.

They then used the information they gleaned to extort over $2,500 from the victim.

“We are concerned that there may be other similar incidents that have not yet been reported,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades.

The suspects were captured in CCTV footage. Both are described as between 18 and 20 years old with a slim build, with one standing six feet tall and the other standing five feet nine tall.
