About fifteen MICE events with 100,000 expected participants planned for the next few months

More than 15 MICE events with an estimated attendance of over 100,000 people are expected to take place in the Macau SAR in the coming months as part of efforts to boost the local economy, the Trade Promotion Institute said. and investments (IPIM).

Among these 15 events, IPIM will participate in the organization of the 13e International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) and the 2022 Guangdong and Macau Branded Goods Fair (GMBPF) in June and July as part of a “Tourism + MICE” strategy of the Macau authorities.

“Tourism+” is a strategic axis aimed at merging the tourism industry with other sectors such as MICE, as well as culture, e-commerce and sports, in the hope of boosting tourism and the economy of Macau.

To accelerate tourism recovery, the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has scheduled a series of major events and activities to take place in the second half of 2022, such as the 10e Macao International Travel (Industry) Expo and Macao Light Festival 2022.

The Office also plans to launch a brand new event: the Food Festival of the five creative cities of gastronomy.

In the first four months of 2022, Macau saw 2.4 million visitor arrivals and an average hotel occupancy rate of 38%, while the average length of stay for visitors climbed to 3.4 days .

The number of events in the SAR improved by about a third in the first quarter of this year, with a total of 97 MICE events held in Macao, which helped to increase the number of participants and visitors from 20% to reach 165,000.

Revenue from exhibition organizers jumped 64.1% year-on-year to MOP 10.19 million, of which 86.5% was generated from exhibition booth rental and 13% from financial support from the government/organizations.

An industry representative recently told the Macau News Agency that the Macau SAR MICE sector is “fighting to survive” as the pandemic continues to impact the local industry for the past two years.

According to data provided by the Bureau of Statistics and Census, some 449 conventions and exhibitions were held in Macau in 2021, attracting 1.4 million attendees, down 70% and 90%, respectively, from 2019 .
